The National Unity Platform (NUP) has unveiled its parliamentary flag bearers for Kampala, urging voters to reject defectors and independents ahead of the 2026 elections. Party leaders said unity and focus on people’s issues remain central to their campaign.
The colourful ceremony, held at the NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule, drew hundreds of supporters who danced, sang, and waved posters of their preferred candidates.
The air was filled with chants of “People Power” as the party’s leadership presented its official contenders for the capital’s parliamentary seats.
“Even under the scorching sun, our supporters remained energetic and determined,” said Hamdan Ssemugooma, one of the event organisers.
Refreshments, including donuts and soda, were distributed to the cheering crowd, who applauded each candidate as they were announced.
Among the nominees was Nakawa East MP candidate Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, who remains in detention. He was represented by his twin brother, Tenywa, who delivered a message of resilience on his behalf.
“Though my brother is still detained, he will serve Nakawa East well. His dedication to the people remains unwavering,” Tenywa said.
Party officials reminded candidates to uphold NUP values and continue advocating for the needs of Kampala residents.
“We urge our supporters not to be swayed by defectors or independents,” said Fred Nnyanzi Ssentamu, one of the candidates. “Stand with the official NUP flag bearers to ensure the people’s voice is heard.”
Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi, who is seeking re-election in Nakawa West, encouraged candidates to remain focused on citizens’ welfare.
“Let’s not abandon the pain of Ugandans. Our mission is to address their challenges when we win,” Ssenyonyi said.
NUP Secretary-General David Lewis Rubongoya emphasized the need for internal unity and urged residents to support the party’s official candidates.
“This is a moment for all of us to come together. The struggle continues, and unity is key,” Rubongoya said.
The event closed with renewed calls for solidarity, as the party promised to intensify community engagements across Kampala in the run-up to the 2026 parliamentary elections.
